How to identify key number? was created by Kapahulu
I just bought this 1976 KZ900. It has one key, a duplicate. I pulled the ignition switch out of its housing looking for a key code number and didn't find one. Did I not look in the right place?

The bike doesn't have a seat lock and I want to get one for it.

Thanks, Mike

There should be a code stamped on the side of the ign lock casing. If it still has the steering lock, there should be a code stamped on the face of it. You don't have to remove it to see it. Difficult to look at it from underneath though. But there is no such thing as a '79 KZ900. 1976 was the only year for the KZ900.

The key code # will be located in different spots throughout the years.
On my '78 it was right beside the keyhole on the ignition, as it is on most early, Zs/KZs.
In '79 it was beside the seat lock's keyhole.
On others it may be on the side or back of either lock.
It will be in one of the series listed below.
Any other number is probably just a cast in part # or something.

Thanks, that was a typo. It's a 1976 KZ900. I guess I got mixed up because I also have 1979 KZ1000.

Anyways, on the KZ900, the seat lock is gone and I don't see a steering lock! Puzzling, I figure they must have had one originally.

I removed the ignition switch completely, cleaned the grime off it and didn't see any numbers. I guess I'll look again!

I went and looked at the ignition switch again, found the key number. Thanks for your help! Now to locate a seat lock with the same key #.
