Is there any thing you can apply to a chrome exhaust that is starting to rust? I was thing of applying wd40 to the surfaces during the winter when I am not able to ride. But I am not sure how to remove wd40 when the winter is over, Any ideas out there?
thanks Greg:)

WD40 evaporates and really isn't any good at preventing rust anyway. Get you some Nevrdull www.nevrdull.com/ It removes light rust. But if it's fairly heavy rust, rub it off with fine steel wool, then polish it with the Neverdull. And when you know you're done for the season, rub the Neverdull on, but don't polish it off. Much better than WD40.

Have you tried Brasso? Same technique as mentioned above.

white diamonds metal polish and a slow speed buffing wheel work wonders on litely pitted chrome and aluminum--plus it works as a coating as well preventing re-rusting.bj

To remove rust I have found Birchwood Casey Blue & Rust Remover to be the absolute best (see link for pic). Any decent gun shop should carry it. Unlike Brasso etc. it is non-abrasive so you won't end up removing chrome. It's not fast; you need to soak the rust area for a couple hours. If you're storing a part for the winter you can just give it a good coating of Vaseline to shield it from moisture. It will wipe off easily in the Spring.

@Bigberst89-- The black exhaust, is it ceramic coated, is it bbq paint, is it really high heat over chrome? How rusted is it? Does it go all the way through? Is it light and just slightly pitting? Some pics might make it a bit easier to suggest something...

Here's some information about black chrome.

webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=...&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

Black Chrome Plating:
Black chrome is usually plated over bright nickel or matte nickel in the same manner as decorative chrome. Black chrome is not quite as hard or wear resistant as normal nickel/chrome and it is not lustrous. The finish may waxed or oiled to improve the final appearance.

How bad is the rust?

Other options could be ceramic coating or spraying with hi-temp black paint.

Good Fortune! :)
