Painted mine black with PJI Pocelain Hard about 2 years ago. Have only put on about 3000 miles, but they have not chipped at all. Just sanded them and sprayed the PJ1 and am happy.

i have heard using oven cleaner for removing that clear coat, if you wanted to make polishing them easier.

What does that typically run compared to having them painted or powder coated? Sounds like the way to go, I wouldn't have thought of it.

I was quoted 100 for a set of mx forks in gold. But ive seen cheaper. You have to shop locally. If the part is already ano, then you need to have that removed chemically first, polish, then reanno. Most polished alu parts come from the factory with clear anno like rims, trees, etc.

I used the same paint on mine. No issues but they are also modern forks so the lower tubes are much shorter.

I'm pretty sure you are talking about adhesion promoter. It is not a top coat. You will need to shoot a clear coat on after the adhesion promoter for protection.

Clear anodize would probably be a good, durable solution. The forks on my bike are factory clear anodized:
