Tail section upgrade on the zephyr was created by Leathal
Ok

I'm looking at cleaning up the tail section on the 90 zephyr It has the duck tail look. What I want to do is get rid of the fender ,the big signal lights and upgrade the tail light to something funky like LED.

Dose anyone have any links or products that will help me out?

Hey, congratulations on the Zephyr, I am a fan. I have a '91 750 zephyr and a '90 550 zephyr, both bought in the past 2 weeks. I've owned 3 zephyrs so far, got rid of the 1st one years back.

I suspect if you focus on finding parts to fit the later naked retro Kaw sportbikes you have a chance of finding something that might work. Finding parts for the early 90s bike is like looking for Jimmy Hoffa. They just did not sell in big enough numbers for it to make sense that aftermarket parts would be available, although Yosh made a pipe (I bought one and put it on in '95).

Another avenue might be the Gpz 550 and 750 bikes from the 1980s, because the early-1990s Zephyr 550/750/etc. were based on the 80s GPzbikes (hence 'retro'). The GPz bikes had big enough production runs, ie. they were popular enough with buyers, that it made sense for aftermarket parts makers to make stuff for them.

In the early 90s it just was not the time for a GPz retro-style naked bike. Even today nobody remembers these Zephyrs so you can get them cheap -- I just bought a used '90 550 for $175 and a '91 750 for $500. I'm still pissed off that I gave away my first 550, really miss it, what an excellent machine.

my 550, needs gas tank leak fixed and a battery (the seller dumped it after months of looking for but not finding a replacement 550 gas tank)

the 750, pretty cool, another poor-seller though in 1991, probably would have sold great today, has a blockage in the fuel delivery to #1 and #2 cylinders, due to rust in the tank

DANG THESE ARE RIGHTEOUSLY COOL BIKES. I can't wait to get them on the road for Spring riding weather.

Good luck with looking for used GPz custom parts etc.
Also check out aftermarket parts for the late 1990s/early 2000s ZR750 aka ZR-7S, and *maybe* the ZR1000, or ZR1100.

Well, there are several options. You know that rizoma turn siganals would be the bees knees and I am going to order a set for my zrx but the thing is I don't think you are in to spending a lot of money? Not sure but to do those turn signals for the set would run around 150 for front and back but they are very sweet pieces.
In Japan those bikes were very popular as the smaller ccs you know. Men like a bike the size of their... most Asian men...
Well anyway here are a few links for tail lights. They may go directly to the z1 light section but they have parts for other bikes there as well.

As far as the plastic fender you can draw a line nice and neat and dremel it or you can take that piece off measure it and have someone make it for you. There are guys on the zrx forum that have skills at fabricating things and I know beyond a reasonable doubt it would not be difficult to make a fender removal kit. Around 100 or a little more? The tail light if clear alternatives doesn't make it may be available in japan but to do what you are looking at doing and make it look the business you will spend about 400 dollars. Close to what you paid for that bike probably.:S

Kawboy made a good point, although I did not use a dremel

I used a level, put my 1991 Zephyr 550 up straight, and drew a line on the black plastic fender. This was in about 1993 or 1994 not long after I bought that first Zephyr 550 I later gave away -- my goal was to lop off as much of the overhanging black plastic fender as I could but retain the taillight and license plate. I wanted to accentuate the ducktail like on the early Kaw triples (only in Britain did triples have a funky rear fender hangdown).

I then took out a hacksaw and cut off the majority of the rearmost hangdown part of the black plastic rear fender and used a file and sandpaper to give it a finished look.

It came out good. Real cheap alternative. I wish I had a photo but I don't.

However I am too much of a purist these days and will leave my current Zephyrs stock, fact is I need to buy stock turn signals for the 550 I just got.

If you have stock turn signals, I do have the small aftermarket ones, look at my photo above. I plan on (at some point in the future) putting stock signals on her. Let me know if you want to swap if you have the stock ones.

Kellermann micro 1000 turn signals I found these that look very nice as well. May put these on my kz.
The prices WIDELY vary from 35 to 100 per signal. You will have to price shop everywhere to get the best price.
Now I have found two different signals that I will have to buy for my bike. kellerman for the kz and rizoma for the zrx. Nice. In my search for stuff I hope that helps a bit.

Thanks guys I'll look at all that stuff.

I'm actually doing the build for a bloke and so far we have fully stripped her went to 810 big bore ceramic coated everything we could. And then powder coated just about everything also. we went to a dual streetfighter headlight set-up. and a new guage set-up. So rather just leave the rear end we'll upgrade it to something wild.

I'll get pics up when we are putting it together and through the build...

So that means I have a full set of stock signal lights and guages and headlight assembly. So newOld_kz1000 hit me up as the stuff is just sitting in the shed.

Wow, one of our friends decided to do that with his 750. When these bikes are already so rare. They brought 1300 of these here of the 1100, and well I won't post up pics of my shell of a bike after the fire but why wouldn't they want the 1100 over boring to 810???
This guy took all of these pieces he bought and invested well over 10k in his and it still looks like a rat bike. He did the inverted fork and zx12 parts and wheels? or something like that rear swing he bought a few before he found the right one and he hasn't even touched the engine yet. I guess some people love their bikes that much. I hope he does well with the build. I like seeing streetfighter bikes. Although I really think the zr1100 design looks sooooo much better than the squarish look of the smaller brothers I guess that is personal opinion.
Those Kellermans look really nice but the rizomas look trick. I am definitely buying both for my rides.
Good luck with the build!
And definitely keep us posted with those pics. People here in USA need to get excited about something every once in awhile. lol
