Wax on?
27 Jan 2011 21:08
I read in a recent post that one should wait 2 months to wax fresh paint. Is this true?
i just painted my tank, tail and side covers with a two part clear. I want to ride but also have my paint protected

I guess it truly would be the clear coat manufacturers recommendation...
I used Sherwin Williams to part clear on mine with a 24 hour flash/cure time... Wet sand, rub out w/rubbing compound and then wax...
2 Arizona summers now, no issues what so ever... Gas has spilled here and there on her with 0% issues..
Now wheres the images... We luv that here....

I owned an automotive detailing company, and I say your best bet would be to try it on a spot where its harder to see if it goes wrong. Their are hundreds of different quality clear coats, and they all seem to react differently.
I'd wait atleast two months before I buffed if I were you, as if the clear coat hasn't fully cured, your clear coat can heat up a lot faster, and can be tacky after buffing. and waxing onto tacky clear coat for sure is not a good idea.
If you have waxed a few cars before I dont see the harm in trying wax, the issue I dont think would be the wax, it would be the clear coat manafactures worry of how hard people go at their car to get it off. Sound silly, but I've seen people remove wax from their truck like they just caught it in bed with their wife.. not good.
So again, no buffing, light coat of wax, and be gentel removing it.. and you may want to use a clay bar before you do any of that, as if it truely is not fully cured, and dirt particles or sand particles will scratch it up.

Dupont recommended a 3 month cure time before waxing Chroma-Clear. But if you are gassing it up and riding go ahead and hand wax it.

Yes, you need to be a chemist nowadays!
I have buffed dupont "Hyper Cure" clear 8 hours after spraying. It buffs easier. That's air dried also.
Plus I always use hand glaze on my paint.

It's been about two weeks since I sprayed the clear. I have already sanded and buffed. the last time I painted, the paint on the tank cracked. I used a normal rattle can clear that time. I am hoping to avoid those results.

If you didn't use 2K urethane clear then you better watch gasing up.

I used that stuff on my Z1 and it came out great. You need 2 cans for typical bike but you'll have extra. I only slightly knocked down the orange peel with 2000 when it was dry, machine buffed it then hand wax. That was like August or something.
