Difference between 1973 Z1 tank and KZ1000 tank? was created by vintagerider
I'm restoring a 73 z1. The bike isn't going to be restored to original condition. I bought it in semi-rouch condition as a lowered and stretched drag style bike. It has KZ body work on it, and I assume a KZ1000 tank with a locking gas cap. I like the older style z1 gas caps with the locking tab and I already have replacement z1 tank badges. The emblem holes are filled in the tank and I didn't dig them out yet. Will these parts fit a kz tank? Is there an overall difference between the tanks? I'm going to paint the bike the factory 73 color and striping but just don't want the tank to look like it's the wrong one. It's kinda hard to tell any difference in looking at pictures. I just don't want to park beside a z1 and realize my tank looks way wrong, even though it really is. Also are KZ900 tanks and Z1 tanks the same overall?
thanks alot for any input

screw holes in differant spots, seams on tank differant, differant petcock mounting depending on which kz its from.......
depends on how picky you are, side covers and tailpiece are easier to tell apart for me anyway

If you park your KZ1000 tank painted like a 73 next to a real 73 the differences a will be obvious. 73 badges and cap will not fit on a KZ without major modifications.

z1 tailpiece is rounded in back to match tail light,kz is flatter to match top of kz tail light

The Z1 tail is also shorter. If you put a Z1 tail and light on a KZ the tail light looks like it is sticking out way past the tail section. If you paint Z1 stripes on a KZ tail the stripes look a lot longer.

I was looking at my KZ tailpiece the other day, I thought to myself "Man, that looks long!" I just assumed they used a Z1 tail on a '76 KZ.
I'm thinking about getting a Z1 round tail-light, how lame would that look? IMHO, the bigger KZ tail-light can't look any more goofy with the nice little ducktail of the tailpiece.
