The Kawasaki part number for the fairing proper for 1982 KZ1000R1 is shared with the 1982 KZ750R1 and the 1982 KZ1100B2. The part number for the 1983 KZ1000R2 and the 1984 KZ1100R are different than the 1982 fairing (and it has nothing to do with the paint scheme)...I do not know how they differ and all appear very similar. So, it depends on which fairing you are in the market for. All are rare, particularly the ELR/SBR/1100R in original paint. If you do find one, they are very pricey. On the other hand, the GPz fairings (750/1100...which are the same as the 1982 ELR except for paint) occasionally pop up on eBay...but, depending on the number of bidders, can go for US$150+ no matter what shape they are in. The trick when purchasing a 1/4 fairing is to ensure that all the mounting hardware comes with the fairing as it, also, is unavailable from Kawasaki and is made of Unobtainium. The hardware alone can fetch US$75 or more on eBay. eBay sellers often separate the hardware from the fairing/windscreen for different auctions.
Maier made (note the past tense) a nice ABS replica square headlight 1/4 fairing that was pretty close to the original. A complete Maier kit sells for in excess of US$200 and there are currently two NOS for sale on eBay. If you have all the mounting hardware, you can substitute the OEM hardware for the hardware that is supplied with the kit...it works well (I speak from a position of strength).
If you are truly desperate, The Japanese are manufacturing an aftermarket ELR/GPz style that appears to be high quality. The catch being, the windscreen and fairing are sold w/out any mounting hardware or the rubber gasket between the fairing and windscreen...the price is about US$400.
Good luck...

Mcdroid cover it perfect imo...
the best bet for the money is to watch for a gpz fairing and then replace the plastic and paint with your flavor...the plastic is the kicker...a used gpz fairing is easy enough to snatch off e-bay,...they do draw twice the price if they claim to have clean plastic and i would doubt how clean the bubble really is.....
if it is just a matter of completing a valued personal project than pay up and get ready to bid ...the ELR fairing pop up every few months nos and are a big deal...look for a new old stock without glass to fetch 120-180 and with glass add some imo...199-299 maybe more if it has the box and claims new...300-500

Just bought a Zook 750 1/4 fairing with decent plexiglas for 25 off Ebay.with a few mods it fit ok and kinda looks like the ELR.Might try that if all else fails.bj
