I think those 1/4 race car fasteners are called "Dzus fasteners" in the right circles, no pun intended. Unfortunately, I already had everything painted, ready to go at the time of this post, but I will definitely keep the dzus fastener plan in mind- that seems like the way to go!
Maybe when I make my carbon fiber side covers...

I didn't do mine yet but this is the route I'm going. One fell off many years ago but when I was restoring the bike I found that the original emblems can be sanded/polished down without ruining the surface. So i was able to remove the scratches.
This is the emblem after wet sanding and polishing with steel wool/Mothers.

Like I said previously, I used a 1/16th bit to drill vertically through the nub/nipple thing. I then ran some fine picture hanging wire with a loop and knot on the outside to keep the wire from pulling through. I just then "twistie-tied" the two wires together with a little tension to hold the covers in place.
Kidkawie, your sidecover emblems look good! I recommend Flitz, if you're open to suggestions- www.flitz.com/

Take it from me cuz I found
If you leave it then somebody else is bound,
To find that treasure, that moment of pleasure,
When yours, it could have been.
