will a buff colered primer make a difference in the basecoat color. looks like the silver base/met. is somewhat translucent?

Depending on how much color pigment is in the basecoat binder, it is not uncommon for your basecoat to look transluscent and require multiple extra coats to get coverage. The proper colored primer will also help you get coverage quicker eg. dark primer for a dark basecoat. Hope it helps ;)

The base coat is a chocolate brown color and it covers quickly. Two or three coats will cover a buff primer evenly. The mid coat is a silver flake mixed in clear so yes you can see the brown underneath it. The third color coat in the Candy Green which is also transparent so you can see the brown base and silver mid coat flake underneath it. Clear would be the final top coat. That is how Kawasaki did it in 76.

I would skip the flake over the pearl white. I tends to make light colors looks dirty when not in the sun. At least test spray a spare part before doing the whole bike to see what I mean.
