I used Duplicolor engine enamel, no primer, but I sandblasted and used a prep chemical similar to por15's metal ready. Supposed to promote adhesion on metal surfaces.

i got off the phone with vht. they said that 650f engine coat would be fine. also they said i could use the clear over the paint. not sure how well it would breathe.

I use to paint all my motors with heat resistant paint (vht engine enamel) until I was cheap and couldn’t afford it this one time…
I used an industrial single Pac enamel that I had in the garage just to see if it would be successful, so far this enamel has been sprayed on 3 motors and the paint has not blistered, faded, cracked, pealed what ever on any of them, first one was done over 3 years ago….
I have used some cheap enamel rattle cans in the past with no success, found they fade/cloud when heated. What I do know is industrial paint has better properties in certain areas (hence being industrial) heat and adhesive properties are 2 areas, with that in mind I would have no hesitation using industrial enamel and I do, on any motor I have.

i use pj1 or vht on all of my engines that get painted the key is good prep work and cleaning the components properly so you don't have any spots the paint wont adhere to.

Used a Fluke infrared temp gun to measure temps on a 650 a couple years ago. Hottest temps we observed were around 400-450f near the exhaust ports, rest of the motor was cooler of course.
