Would anyone know of a person that restores the inside of a 1970s Bell Star helmet.I have a painter for the outside. If possible in the Houston area?
Its really nice and hate to let it just sit.

Are you planning on wearing it?

Not sure what the shell is made of, but plastics tend to become brittle over time.

Enjoyed a Bell Star for many miles, back when.
But recall it being a heavier weight helmet.

A 40 year old helmet should be better than nothing, but would prefer investing toward a new helmet where intending to actually wear and rely on it for noggin protection while riding.

Even if the earlier design was comparable to modern technology, would fear that foam beneath fiberglass shell had deteriorated over time.

But in answer to the question:

Yes, and recall several years ago some articles warning against repainting some of the plastic (plycarbonate) helmets (as opposed to fiberglass), because the paint could react with and soften the plastic.

Don't remember the specifics.

Polycarbonate is extremely UV sensitive and hygroscopic. Take a look at any of the older plastic headlights on cars from the 80s and 90s. They all have hairline fractures in them (besides turning yellow and no longer clear). Not sure if the bell is PC or glass, but a glass helmet of that vintage would not be any good either. I have a 1979 vintage Simpson Kevlar full face but I would not trust it either.
