Gas tank compatability? was created by Mjsenz
I just bought a mechanically immaculate 1976 KZ400 for my wife, and the only thing wrong with it is a faded and dented gas tank. I see they're fairly common on eBay, and was wondering what other years or models would be interchangeable with the fittings on ours. Any and all feedback is very much appreciated.

You do not indicate which model you have. But I found the following on the Kawasaki web site. That the d3 from 76 and the d4 from 77 used the same tank and that the s2 from 76 and the s3 from 77 shared the same tank.

How do I determine the model?

First I am not familar with the kz400 models but most likely you can determine which model you have via the vin or frame number. I think there were 2 models offered in 76 a standard and a special.
You will find info on both models on this site under the KZ Information menu or use this link kzrider.com/index.php?option=com_content...d=6&id=235&Itemid=50
Use the info there to compare the frame or engine number on your bike to determine what you have.

The D model has a front disk brake, dual exhaust, and electric start.
The S model has front drum brake, 2-into-1 exhaust, and no electric start (and smaller battery). It also has no tachometer.
The carb jetting is slightly different too.
