replacement tank? was created by Topper
My tank seems to have developed some pin holes. Gas is seeping through and bubbling the paint.

I'm looking for a used replacement. How interchangeable are the kz tanks?

Mine's a 1988 kz305 Ltd.

How many pin holes? Would you be able to bring it some where who can weld up the holes? I used jb weld to repair some pin holes in my friends 77 harley sportster, and that was 5 years ago, hasn't leaked yet. I would check e-bay, that will be the best way to go, or the classified adds on the forum. Not sure at how interchangeable the kz 305 tanks are, maybe a kz 250 tank would fit, anyway go to www.kawasaki.com , look it up on the parts guide there.

You think JB Weld would do it? Did you just smear it on the outside of the tank?

it worked fine for the sporty tank, as long as you leave it set up and dry, i see no reason for it not to work. Could you post a pic of the pinholes in question?

I'll try to get some pics but it might take a day or two. The bike is at the paint shop.

I had it repainted, looked great, then after about a week some bubbles started to show up in the paint. Took it back to the paint shop and they said there appears to be pinholes in the tank allowing gas to seep through and bubble the paint.

With the JB Weld, do you just mix it, then smear it on the outside of the tank near the pinhole, sand it smooth and paint?

I've been doing some research online. I think what I might need is a tank sealer. I've read some good stuff about a product called Red-Kote. I'm going to give that a shot before replacing the tank.

As this has been covered many times before. First of all if you have holes in the tank you should do it right. The tank will have to get repainted at the end. Take the tank to the radiator shop have them flush it, find all the leeks, divot the holes, solder them up and than line the tank. Depending on where you live it will cost about $60. That is what it costs me here in the Chicago suburbs. I have it done all the time on different tanks. The JB weld will hold up for a while but the bond will not. The hole should be soldered. If you have one than there a re more ready to manifest themselves. Don't do a half assed job, do it right. it isn't worth the risk and the added expense later. Red-Coat is the most widely used product by radiator shops.

I hadn't thought of calling a radiator shop. Nor did I realize it might be that inexpensive. Thanks for the tip!

a good thing to do would be to strip the tank before you take it to the radiator shop. This way it will be easier for them to see the leaks and to solder them up. If it is OE paint, it will come off very easy with any commercial stripper. It was only Acrylic Lacquer back than.

Well I called a local radiator shop and they said to flush it a solder up a pinhole the cost would start at $125. Meaning the final bill would probably be more. That seems like a lot for one or two pinholes to me.

The holes are so small I can't even see them. I'd like to try a combination of jbweld and red-kote. I've got a can red-kote and the instructions look pretty straight forward.

I could use some advice on using the jbweld for this application though.

I imagine it goes something like:
  • sand off the paint
  • mix jbweld
  • smear on the outside of the tank around the hole
  • let it dry
  • sand smooth

Am I missing something?

You will probably miss some pin holes.

The radiator shop will submerge the tank and chase all the bubbles down.

I guarantee you that there are more hole just waiting for you to apply more paint before they start leaking.

Have you tried to find a tank on eBay? Roy

I have tried to find a tank on ebay with no luck. I can't afford to put $125+ into fixing the tank at the radiator shop.

My hope is that Red-Kote on the inside of the tank will stop and prevent any further leaks at least for a couple years. At that point I might be in a better position to put more money into the bike or be able to find a replacement tank.
