Correct, thanks! I was asking if anyone knew what the factory originally used on the inside of the tanks. Ed

Gasoline. :P

   You'd think I could have figured that out on my own.

I have seen a few of your responses. I thought you could appreciate that one.

I read an article here about how to clean a tank. They suggested that after you clean the inside of the tank use wd40 to prevent flash rust until you can put gas in it. ..

He wasn't really asking how to treat tank rust.
Personally, I think wd40 is too thin & kinda evaporates. A better alternative would be snowmobile fogging oil. Or use motor oil & roll the tank around to coat it.

Uuumm yea...
That first paragraph was in regards to the post right before mine and I figured 650Ed might find that advice useful as well, since he is thinking about his tank.

The second paragraph and the follow up sentences are fully on topic about the sealers. I didn't comment on how the factory did it because quite frankly, I didn't know and didn't just want to make something up.

I hope that clears any confusion up that you may have about my post.
Thanks

As for the factory tanks, I believe they were "flashed" in a caustic bath. I know there was some kind of electrolisys setup in the bath, zinc or something else... guessing on element.

I cleaned and kreemed my pretty rusty Z1B tanks over 10 years ago and I have no issues with it.
I think that,as for any paint or body work job, the most important is the preparation and more often than not faillure is due to poor prep.
