So I tried stripping all the old paint off, spraying the emblems with black and then painting over the raised parts in silver using a paint pen. It was an improvement over the previous crappy paint job, but not by a lot. Here's a before and after.

I wasn't really happy with that (although the silver paint pen looks better in person than in the pic above).
So I tried what others here suggested, I sanded off the silver paint, the black below it and then got down to the brassy layer. I kept sanding and that ugly brass color went away too exposing the nice shiny silver base metal underneath.
The one on the left is the sanded one and the one on the right is the silver paint pen. This is a more accurate pic of what the paint pen one looks like in person.

I definitely liked the sanded one better. So I gave the other emblem the same treatment.
The pic below shows them on their side covers.
One tip for anyone trying this. Use a good paint stripper to remove all the old paint and be sure you get as much of that red out from between the raised parts on the LTD. I didn't get all of it and if you look real close you can see it peeking out in some of the corners where the black paint was sanded off.

Not directly related to the emblems but had to add this too. Just got those side covers (above) painted as well as the tank. Here's the tank. I need to put some Kawasaki badges on the side of the tank. When I do I'll give them the same treatment as the side emblems.
It's hard to tell from the photo, but its a metallic green and the white stripes have a touch of pearl to them.

Thanks! I just got some old beat up tank badges from ebay. I'm going to do the same with them and then stick them on the tank.
With no screw holes on the tank I guess I'll use double sided tape, though I haven't found a good source for that. The stuff they have at Lowes is too thick.
I know they make tape for this purpose. 3M makes some but I don't know where I can get it.
