Custom rattle cans? was created by AnxiousCowboy
I've been thinking about painting a couple parts on my bike. I've always wanted to do black with tiny gold flake in the clear coat. Black is easy, but I can't find any gold flake clear coat cans.

I've heard of services that will fill rattle cans with paint. I've been trying to find a service like that online but can only find people who actually sell the piece of equipment to fill the cans. Can someone help point me in the right direction? Has anyone ever used a flake clear coat from a rattle can?

Explore www.colorrite.com as they supposedly will 'aerosol' any color paint. I have no personal experience with this company.

also check out the "preval" painter...it's an aerosol sprayer that has a refillable cup on the bottom so you can mix your own paint, it works well.

you can do it with the preval cans but I would not do that on large parts. Also, you dont want to the mix the flake in the clear coat. This will make it look textured and you will be able to feel the flake. you want to get an intercoat clear to mix it in. Then you will clear coat over that. I own a custom paint and body shop if anyone has any questions I would be happy to help you out any way I can.

The bad thing that I have heard about getting the aerosol cans is that they lack hardener, due to shelf life constraints, and that the paint is less durable and isn't nearly as fuel/chemical resistant as paint that has hardener added to it.

kzbobber, is this accurate in your experience ?

It would seem that the preval cans would possibly be a solution to this problem.

I have used the preval, and if you aren't going to get a compressor and gun and do it "properly" then it is great. The little aerosol unit is tiny, but lasts much longer than you might think. I bought 2 to clear coat my bike thinking one just would not be enough. I used only half of one can and did 6 clears on my tank and 3 on my side covers and 3 on my maier fairing. One thing I did notice is that the aerosol gets REALLY cold during use, so to avoid orange peel I would recommend warming the can up in your hands well during flash times. Other than that I loved it, and it's cheap! ;)

you are both correct. any type of paint that comes pre mixed in a can that you would buy at autozone etc. is laquer based and will not hold up for long. The Preval cans alow you to mix auto paints in them and use. Like I said though, if you are painting small parts that will work and probably look decent, but if you are doing large pieces than I would always recomend having it done properly. It will look better and last alot longer.
