Hi

I'm the original owner of a 78 KZ650 C2. After years of searching, I finally found a NOS tank for my near perfect C2. The new tank did not come with the hook pin so I ordered a couple form Kawasaki. I was wondering if anybody has any experience/advice on peening the hook pin end? It took me about 10 years to find a perfect original tank so I certainly dont want to damage anything installing the new pin.

Many Thanks
DW

Yes. I found an NOS tank for one of my KZ1000's and it never had the pin installed. I laid thin towels across the areas on both sides of the pin framework on the tank. Inserted the pin, pushed a heavy hammer against the head of the pin (but on top of the towel to prevent scratching) to hold it in place. On the thinner end of the pin (the end to be peened), I used a flat punch and a hammer to peen/expand the end (while also protecting the tank with a towel). It only takes a few whacks of the hammer/punch to deform the end of the pin. It works better with two people...one to hold the heavy hammer against the head of the pin and the other to peen the pin.
