Gas cap, no key....
31 Mar 2010 15:12
I have a tank that I want to use for my project, that I don't have the key for. My key will not work on it, and I have tried a few random keys with no luck. What's the best way to remove the cap? It's the flat rectangle style gas cap, the same as the one on my '81 KZ750H.

They should work with any Kawasaki key They are universal. The only thing is that there are the short early keys and the longer second generation keys. The rectangle works with the longer key.

I just went and checked all of my gas caps that I have, they work with almost any key. The only keys that don't work are my house keys. My car keys work all my padlock keys work all my Kawasaki keys work. This means that the gas cap lock is frozen with corrosion. Squirt copious quantities of WD-40 or Brake-Free or similar product into the key hole. I would get a key blank from your local hardware store and start working the lock. Don't use your key so you don't brake it off inside. If the key blank fits into the key slot it will work. The lock only unlocks in the clockwise rotation 1/4 turn.

Re: Gas cap, no key....

Well, my key (ignition key for 81 KZ) does not work. It works fine in the LTD tank that came on the bike, and I also tried one of my "random" keys off of my keychain, and it opened my LTD tank without problem. Nothing so far is opening the ebay tank....
So I'm guessing I will have to drill out the lock. I don't want the cap anyway. I will just swap over the one that does work.

Don't drill it out. Just free the mechanism with WD-40 and work it. I just had a KZ1300 tank the same way. It took me about 20 minutes to free it up. It finally turned.

Heck, If you don't want the cap, I'll take it off your hands. Even if it's corroded.

I'll go mess with it. I didn't see your post about the WD40 before I posted. That is most likely the issue...

If you have another top then tap out the hinge oh I don't know what its called but at the hinge that pin that goes through the gas cap and tank. Hinge Pin? Then you can soak it or send it to Otto.

Sorry guys, the drill bit was the only answer.
The lock was completely seized up somehow. I drilled a little hole at the top of the lock, pulled off the top keyhole cap, and had to really muscle the lock with a big screwdriver. I have a feeling I wasn't the first one to jack with it...
Sorry I couldn't salvage it. I soaked it and tried it for two days. I only have so much patients
