gluing metal logos to sidecovers.
17 Mar 2010 10:44
I finally clearcoated my paint last night, and once I am done polishing it I want to stick my "1000 LTD" logo's back on the sidecovers, what is the best adhesive to keep it on there? would double sided tape hold it?

It might, but I've used a thin film of the black RTV adhesive/sealant for things I want to stick really well.
Before applying anything like the badges, clean the area realy well with some rubbing alcohol and the part too. It removes any oils or substances like this for a good bond.
Double sided tape usually has a one time shot at getting it positioned, but the RTV has a long time(usually several hours) before it sets up, so if you're unhappy with where the badge is, it can be moved somewhat.

I don't have any RTV sealant, but I do have some "no more nails" that I got for another project, I suppose I could use that too.

my side covers are now painted with a 2 part urethane, so i think they wouold be resistant to most solvents. I will likely use the 2 sided tape, that is what was put on by the PO when he painted it, and it was on there really well.

Double sided adhesive works beautifully. I use the stuff designed to put moldings on car doors. I bought some at Harbor Freight and the stuff is fantastic.
The stuff I bought is part #97930 and it is fantastic. It is carried in the stores it is not on their web sight.

An Automotive parts store would be your best bet. They sell a double-sided tape designed to work on car emblems.

I use Q-Bond, which is a form of superglue from down under! It's available in the US at NAPA stores. I've never trusted super glues in the past, but this stuff is different. But...it's not very reversable, so if you eventually want to take the logos off, it might be a problem.

Just an asside, There is a product, "Gorilla Glue".which is frankly, Awkward to use,& messy. It's just Glue, BUT. Once set, Is pretty much permenant. I would imagine, that if used in this application, Emblem or sidecover would be destroyed before removal. In set-up it "Grow's" requiring clamping to keep in place, and unless used in exteeem moderation will weep around glued bits. If you try it, experement first. luck G

side note...i use the clear fast drying gorilla glue now...it is best to still wet both sides of the thing being glued and use some clamp or pressure till dry ...i just re-anchored a gate latch -catch post to some brick exterior....a few of the bricks had popped free in their mortar joints...i simply got both sides really wet /leaving the mortar joint attatched...then painted on (spread) a whole 5 $ bottle of clear gorila glue ....for the trhee bricks...pushed em back in their slots and the glue expanded to fill all cracks and pores...it was dry in ten minutes and i chissled the extra off...and was ready to drill anchor shields....i have used it also to fix broken garden statues by drilling a all thread dowell and coating both sides with the same process...it works killer on stone projects that have pieces broken because it expands into any holes or viods and is weather proof...broken corners on a block wall...broken bird baths ect..it also will seal garden/outside p.v.c. joints by filling cracks and joints when drying...untill the time when you can re-do the job....pee/S traps that leak/drip can be coated around the seams also.....never get it on your hands...trust me...i would be very carefull using it on a bike...any over glue will be permanent
