Drilling fiberglass was created by pburnhamb
I have a fiberglass seat-pan that i'm going to mount to a metal seat frame (with hinges). I need to drill a couple holes down through the fiberglass to connect the metal to the glass. My question is: whats te best way to drillthrough the fiberglass? its not thick and im worried it will splinter and crack....
thanks guys

Try putting some tape on the underside of the hole, and place the seat-pan on top of a board that you will drill into. Might try using a forstner bit that is nice and sharp. The main thing is that you don't want to apply too much pressure. The stuff actually cuts fairly easily, but is hard/brittle. Will wear your drills quickly, and is prone to cracking. Get ready to have the itchies!

I would use duct tape on either side and start with a small bit also , maybe 3-4mm , then 6mm , then 8-10 mm depending on what you need . Go slow at it too.

Cheers

Use a Unibit. It won't self feed and tear out a big hole.

I just drilled my fiberglass seat pan with a regular sharp drill bit with no tape or shims I had no problems what so ever. It drilled straight through though the tape would help.

I used to drill painted control panels on the machines we made. Use several layers of tape, moderate speeds and steady pressure.
