Doing Powder Coating Yourself, Anyone?

I've been contemplating whether to have the frame on my GPz restoration project powder coated or strip it and paint it myself.

I've seen several home shop do-it-yourself powder coating systems and I was wondering if it's worth it to invest and tackle the job myself.

I'm planning on restoring my 650 Custom next year as well, so that would be frame #2 I would use it for.

Is it worth it? Pro's and con's?

Opinions?

Thanks all! B)

One issue is it would take a pretty large oven for the frame, so you would need storage space to keep it when not in use.

eastwood.com has curing lamps for powder coating and after looking into, decided not for me...

Most likely I'm worng here where others have success... I figured for the associated equipment coasts, it just wouldn't pay for itself especially if the results where as I came across in forums on the web...

I'm sure through trial and error as in all things new, you'd come up with a procedure that was satisfactory... Then again, have the frame done professionally and use a kitchen 220Vac oven for the smaller pieces would be doable.... ;)

Unless your planning to do it on a regular basis just take it to a good local shop and have them coat it.
Less headache.

like it was said, you will need a damn big oven for a frame.
the rule is pretty much any metal part you can fit in a ELECTRIC oven you can powdercoat.
it's all in the prep.
sandblast and clean.
when you think it's clean enough, do it again.
just for a reference, here are my cases before and after.

kawsakiman - did you do that yourself? Excellent looking job!

I don't think I can fit my frames in my oven :P and I suppose I'd be worried about getting an uneven treatment if I used the lamps OMR talked about.

Well, I suppose I got the answers I expected. Looks like it's back to the drawing board. Thanks for the replies fellas!

Any local powdercoater should be able to do it for around $100 with blasting. I got one of the guns off ebay and did all my small parts in a cheap toaster oven. They turned out really good but it was a bitch getting the parts in without bumping into the walls of the oven.
