Possible problem with powder coating was created by nebiker51
I've noticed that alot of guys are getting the aluminum parts powder coated which exposes it to 350 degree temperatures. In the scuba industry if a aluminum tank is exposed to that temperature it has to be condemned because it destroys the strength of the metal. I know in scuba we are dealing with tanks that hold three thousand pounds of pressure. Has anyone heard of any problems with any of these bike parts breaking after being powder coated?

it would probably depend on the type of aluminum and if its heat treated ,welding aluminum exposed it to more heat than that.

On my 78 I powdercoated all the motor covers and didn't have a problem.

With engine temps running at 230 to 270 F degrees, wouldn't think it'd be a problem... Then through into the mix the areas directly in close proximity to the exhaust piping.... Naw, you'll be ok...

In our situation you are dealing with Aluminum castings. Not the specialized Aluminum alloys used for hi pressure vessels. These are two totally different metals and different applications. The irony is, that dive tanks are also powder coated for corrosion protection. They are not bare metal aether.
