'81 KZ1000 LTD Tank Options?
21 Dec 2009 13:52 - 21 Dec 2009 16:08
Hey there!
Here comes my first (dumb?) question!
Would the "standard" tank fit on the '81 "LTD" frame?? Would other tanks (other years, models) fit as well??
O'k, that was 2 questions!
I really not a big fan of the LTD style, but I wanna build a nice "2 up sport-cruiser" for my wife and I. I have a potential deal on this bike (it's in mint mechanical shape) but I wanna pick your brains first!
I'd be modifying the seat too (custom unit), so the tank seat junction won't be a big issue in this case.
Opinions? Come on! You know you got 'em!!

Well, if you are 'handy', you can make almost any tank fit, but the only two drop-on tanks that will work with no modification are the 1981/82 LTD and CSR tanks (rephrased, KZ1000K1/2 and KZ1000M1/2) These tanks attach via a bolt on the rear of the tank while the 'standard' (KZ1000J1/2/3) attach via a bung that is pushed into a rubber gasket thingy.

O'k, that's good info!
I'm really looking for a simple replacement, as you suspected. Minor mods are fine, but I don't wanna get into reshaping the bottom of the tank to make it fit.
Does the std. tank fit on the mounts at the steering head? The mounting at the back of the tank (seat) I think can handle!
Thanks!

I don't know if the front tank mounts are similarly placed for the CSR/LTD vs the J models...the J model tanks aren't a whole lot bigger than the CSR/LTD tanks...if you are looking for a larger tank for touring, you might consider a 1981/2 GPz1100 tank...difficult to locate but larger than all the mentioned tanks. I do know that one of our members (otakar) took a 1981/82 LTD and put a GPz tank on it...he has a thread or two with pictures of the transformation.
