need help on Z1 paint decision
16 Dec 2009 23:11 - 16 Dec 2009 23:12
Okay, I have a 1978 kz1000 I'm getting ready to repaint. The bike is all stock but the PO did a non-stock repaint job looks terrible.
Now I have a crazy wildman 'shoulda kept me back in 4th grade on ignorance' idea and I want advice/opinions.
I want to repaint this completely stock '78 kz1000 A2 to a stock 1974 maroon Z1 stock paint/decal scheme or a 1975 blue Z1 stock paint/decal scheme.
Then, ultimately when I sell it -- I got some splainin to do!
I just always liked the '74 purple and the '75 greenish blue Z1 schemes and not ANY of the others.
If you saw a stock bike come up for sale in the wrong original paint/decal scheme would you pass
on it?

If the bike is solid and the right price I would buy it. Just make sure you mention it in the ad when you sell it about the paint or you will get a thousand "experts" telling you it's the wrong color.

don't do it...they pop up a lot and get fair bids...but still ..don't do it....it's like painting shelby stripes on old mustang or putting a fake supercharger scoop on a pinto.....weak.....gloss black and new emblems will fetch more...get more looks...and be less explaining....it's your bike though who cares what folks think, paint it pink

Sounds like you have already made a decision as you have announced you will sell the bike. That in mind...keep it stock...you'll recoup more. HOWEVER, some of the best looking bikes (peruse some of the German Z sites) have non-standard paint...e.g. Z1/A/B paint on later models and they looked great! Saw a Zephyr with a Z1 paint scheme and it was beautiful. If you might be willing to take a loss, paint the bike how you want it and enjoy it while you have it...don't know what your finances are like, but pick up another body set and have both.

Stock looking paint is usually the way to go if you are selling the bike. But if you don't have the stock exhaust, nice 75 colors would not hurt the value too much over a 78 repaint.

If you clicked on paintworkz.com, then on cusotomers bikes, scroll down to number 6 I think. One look at that 1980 KZ1000 should make your mind up. Nice looking bike.
1980 KZ1000 LTD-B4(MK II engine) - Progressive suspension, MTC pistons, Dynojet Stage III, all wear items replaced, WFO paint scheme(1978), etc..
Past bikes- 2 1976 Kz900's, 5 1975-76 Honda CB750's, Honda 500 -4, Honda 250, Honda 125, Honda 100, Suzuki RM 250, Honda XL350, Kawasaki KLR 650, etc..

I just don't have the funds to do it. I am probably, due to being poor going to take the old paint off the tank and side covers/tail, prime it with automotive primer, then spray it glossy black and buy a set of '78 decals. I got lucky here in terms of resale because the glossy black paint scheme was one of the standard '78 colors. I figure I'll be out less than $100 for the glossy black paint and decals not counting my labor.
That '80 bike is *exactly* what I wanted, of all the paint schemes for these fine machines that one is my favorite.
