Painting engine guards with rattle can properly? was created by sakiguy
I have stripped the black paint off the engine guards and sanded all the rust off. I bought some semi-gloss rustoleum paint. Should I primer first, then paint, then use a clear coat? Or should I just paint and then use a clear coat...or just paint without a clear coat.

First soak the parts in Muriatic acid. Wash them in distiled water and than paint with Rustoleum.

If you want a hard finish, bake in the oven at 350 F for about an hour(stinks,so open windows and use a fan if possible).

Have them powdercoated. Should only cost you about $15-$20.

I would spray them w rattle can engine paint then bake 'em in the oven. The cost would be cheap & you'd have plenty of paint left over to do other parts.

Man, I can't believe how good this works. I didn't use an oven, but I used an old toaster that was going to be thrown out any way. I'd just bake it in between a few coats and the finish seems very durable and very nice imo.

Hmmm, you heated them between coats? Well, I hope that works. You'll know for sure after putting them to use. I simply paint parts as per the instructions, then bake them once - 20 minutes or so at 175, then raise the temp to 225 for another 20. I hang most parts on coat hangers to do it.

If you bake parts, make sure that when they are hot (ie. when you take them out of the oven) you don't touch the paint, it will be really soft.
