I used brake fluid then finished off with sand blasting. The sandblasting will remove anything left on there and rough up the plastic for excellent adhesion of the primer.

I would use this and sand plastic with 400 grit clean with soap and water dry, apply plastic parts adhesion promoter comes in a spray can. Then Apply plastic parts flexable primer also comes in a spray can sand and paint.

I sanded some side covers i had with like 180 grit, then hit it with brake cleaner and a parts washing brush with plastic brissels. Then wet sandid it again with a red scoch bright pad then 400 grit.

It worked! But the paint on it was an old spray paint job.
it didnt damage the plastic either.

PPG (and others) make a paint remover specifically for plastic parts. Any auto parts store should have or can get this for you.

I'm currently trying the brake fluid method and its not working for me very well. Its hardly doing anything to the paint. Its DOT 3 fluid and the paint is just Dupli-color lacquer, hardly doing anything to it. Just left it overnight and barely any change at all.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.......don't use anything to remove paint from plastic parts other than elbow grease and various grit papers. Strippers especially PPG were not designed to remove layers of Krylon. That is the unfortunate result of DIY rattle can jobs. No bueno. Remember too....sand plastic parts easy and evenly. If you cut into the plastic primers and paints will swell or attack the plastic. And if you have any residue of stripper, brake fluid etc. left it will ruin your new finish. You can also have parts media or soda blasted. Although..... find a company who has done it before. If you need an adhesion promoter, there is a product named Bulldog. Works quite well.

I've never used the brake fluid idea...for some reason, it just doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Used to paint quite a bit years ago and that stuff, like oil, grease, etc. can mess up a good paint job real easy. Yea...a good cleaning should do but it only takes once and some of that hidden some where to come out at the last minute to mess up a lot of work. I have had sidecovers turn to jelly from stripping using chemicals (what a mess) and have always used a very gentle blasting media at times but mostly elbow grease and lots of sanding. I agree...if that plastic absorbs any of that liquid media and it isn't dry and you paint...you will get to do it all over again. Been there, done that also.

I've heard that bologna strips paint.I've never tried it and don't know how long it takes. I always use Capt'n Lees paint stripper. No smell, safe for some plastics and fiberglass and it completely nuetralizes with water.
