How to repair bolt hole in the tail lite?
27 Sep 2009 20:10
A tail lite bolt head snapped off & I tried to redrill & tap the hole but buggered the job. I can thread the bolt into the hole, but it's a loose fit. Is there a good fix for this? Such as to refill the hole, drill & tap it. Or some product that does virtually the same thing. I don't want to load the threads w teflon tape or anything like that. Unless I have too.

I have seen JB Weld do wonders. Fill the hole and chase the threads before it fully hardens. If you can get enough in there without removing it when you chase it it might work for ya.

I'd rather not drill the hole out any bigger.
Here's a product. It's not exactly what I was thinking of, since the problem is that the hole is too big.

Put a thin coating of car wax on the threads of the screw, let dry, gently brush threads with an acid brush, fill the hole with JB-Weld, install waxed screw and let it cure completely. Gently but firmly back the screw out. As a matter of fact, use an allen screw or hex head screw the same size as the factory screw, cause it's gonna be tight, but it works.

Could get a longer screw, same diameter, with appropriate size/style head, and acorn nut, from hardware store. If necessary, shorten new screw to exact length needed to tighten into the acorn nut.
The acorn nut won't be noticed, and will afford a smooth surface that doesn't snag a cleaning rag or cut a finger when wiping the area.
Good Luck!
