Also, I've been reading that the clubman bars aren't all that comfortable, and that drag bars may be the way to go. Does anyone have any pics of a KZ650 with drag bars?

i love the clubmans on my streetfighter. The frame is a 79 kz650. It does get uncomfortable on long rides, but im 19 and just deal with it :)

Have you looked at the superbike bars? That's what I use and they are not that uncomfortable. My brother has clubmans and I can not get used to them.

I thought about the superbike bars, but I think drag bars are the way I'm going to go. Is there anything special I need to know for disassembling the throttle and other controls?

clubmans can dent your tank if the bike tips over, drag bars make controling the bike in corners a tricky game, superbike bars are the ticket on a standard like these...if it's chopped like jordans or has a custum drop seat or that type of mod ...other bars complete the "look" feel ect...on a standard superbikes get er done fine......repeat clubmans can dent your tank in a heartbeat....imo....

No real issues except for pinching cables or brake lines. Sometimes you run out of bar space trying to get the brake reservoir and hose to clear the tach and bending cables adds friction to making it tougher to pull them. One other thing is you may want to go with bar end mirrors because the short bars only gives you a good view of your shoulders.

But the other concerns are real. Clubmans are something people generally have to get used to and can hit the tank when turned to the stop. Drag bars are also both something people generally have to get used to. They are kind of specialty items and not really considered comfort bars. If you are going to do any distance riding you would do better to get the happy medium. Where you are not on your tailbone or on your nutz. Your thighs will take the greater abuse without making pain killers your good friend or making you less inclined to ride your bike. I too like the Superbike or even Daytona bars. But it is a personal choice. Then again you can buy a rolling LA-Z-Boy and sit any way you want. :P

With my superbike bars (which I give two thumbs up),the brake line from the reservoir would hit the tank when turning. Ended up turning the line upwards to give it enough clearance. Worked fine, but have since installed a different reservoir.

You'll want barend mirrors. plus they look cool

Like others said, your cable lengths will now be too long when changing bars. It can work, but may take some fiddling. Be sure to route your throttle cables correctly, as to not get any revving when turning.

The link above for the clubman bars show a center dimention of 4.8" which just fit. 6" center would give more space for the switch gear.

Any lower bar than stock can risk hitting the tank.
I've had a few different bars over the years.

Clubmans (which I currently have) are closest to the tank, but I've built up the steering stop on the frame to stop the bars from hitting the tank. M/C and other lines clear the tach etc, but cables will be long.
Rear set foot pegs help comfort wise, as the stock foot pegs will, with clubman combo, get cramped and uncomfortable.
I try not to lean on my hands and wrists all day or they get sore.
There are different lengths in the drop of the clubmans.
This set has 5~6 inches of drop:

Current clubmans. Dent from when using the yellow bars in bottom pic:

Drag bars or a low raised bars do clear the tank fine, but can hit the tank in a spill (got the dent to prove it) as really any bar can. M/C often hits the tach.

High bars like a stock kz650D (SR) feel odd to me now, but you do get used to any set up over time.

Bar end mirrors:
I had a single left side one using the clubmans and did not like it. Very hard to see behind me. I had to turn my head too far to have a good look.

If you're not dropping your seat height the clubmans will likely make your wrists go numb after about 20 minutes. The geometry of them is just all wrong for the stock seat configuration. I ran clubmans with the stock seat and replaced them with superbike bars within about 2 weeks. Once I built my custom seat/tail section for my cafe I put clubmans back on and they aren't bad, of course the seat kills my ass now instead of the bars killing my wrists but I can deal with that a lot easier than I can numb hands.

If you do go with clubmans get your throttle cables shortened or buy shorter cables so you don't end up with bound up throttle cables (trust me, you DON'T want to have your throttle stick wide open on you cause the cables bound up!!!).

Clubman bars are by far the coolest. Don't listen to that long post about dents cables and other BS. You can rotate them up or out for clearance. There not too bad on a long ride unless your using some rigged up rear sets. Your foot position (standard pegs) takes pressure off your back.

Besides there only like 20 some dollars and you can resell them if you don't like them. I LOVE them. Look up joerider in the gallery for some photos.

I bought the smaller sized bars, I believe there are two different sizes being made.

I tries clubmans on my 79 sr and although they look great, i tend to find myself resting my left hand on top of the control pod rather than on the bars. they do fit however and if you are comfortable with the posture, that is fine. I think i'm going to go with Superbike or Daytona Bars next. i agree that the stock SR bars feel weird, kind of like buckhorns to me. my last bike, a 1982 XJ650 Seca had Superbike bars, and i tried the same clubmans i have on the SR now. I am just looking for something lower and narrower than the stock bars. Ditto the Bar end mirrors, definate cool factor, i got a pair of ebay, fully adjustable, for about $16 shipped.
