GAS CAP LATCH PIN QUESTION/HELP was created by Forrest
I am transferring the original gas cap to a new old stock gas tank on my 77 KZ650. I have been able to take out the old hinge pin and reuse. The latch pin is another story. The old tank had been repainted by the previous owner. I am not sure if I can drive it out like the hinge pin. The old one is painted over on the left side. It appears to have a button cap or some such. Like I said it is painted over and hard to tell unless I strip/chip off the paint. The new tank did not come with either pin. Should I drive/knock this out of the old tank? Should I just go to the Kawi dealer or a hardware store and look for an equivalent pin? I could use a little help here if anyone has any experience. Thanks

You may be able to drive it out, but sometimes these pins are peened over on one side and have a slight 'head' on the other...usually means they are somewhat permanent. The latch pins are still available from Kawasaki (I ordered several last year just to have) or you can make your own.

Just order a new one at the dealer. It's called a "pin hook", part number 92043-126, and it's still an active Kawasaki part. I love the fact that Ma Kaw still offers many parts for these old bikes. It should cost about $2. Ed

Thanks Mcdroid and Ed. I am on it! Calling my local Kawi dealer right now.

Been so long that I don't remember why I had to replace mine but I just ran a screw in and it's been there for over 20 years! So I can still get the "right" part, huh? :P

Hey Bluemeanie, give you props for taking the common sense path years ago. I already ordered the stock pin. AND, yes the original part can still be had just in case that screw backs out and gets lost  I pick up my pin tomorrow! :cheer:
