Need Side Cover kz1000 was created by gvsu141
I just traded a 850 yamaha special for a 1980 kz1000 ltd, and need a left side cover. I was wondering if anybody knows of a good place to get a cheap cover, preferably with the emblem. Paint doesn't matter because the whole bike is getting repainted anyway.

You must define 'cheap'...the side covers are available as an aftermarket through www.americanclassix.com ... you might also contact www.Z1Enterprises.com and they can order them for you, even if they do not stock them. You can peruse eBay and you may get lucky :) Emblems are available from both the above vendors.

Hey now that link to z1 brings a question to mind.
I can tell you about american classix side covers. I initially didn't like the quality of his sidecovers. They require a bit of work to straighten out when painted but my painter did an excellent job of taking the waves out. The pins are not exactly the same size as the originals and I didn't like that at all. I have had no problems with the cover coming off after the first time it happened. I honestly believe that as long as you use fresh rubbers when attaching the sidecover you won't have too many problems with the cover flying off. I have an idea of why they came off besides the whole dried out grommet and wind issue. The wiring that goes on that side of the frame often comes around and pushes on the front of the cover making it easy for the sidecover to come loose. I don't know if that is fact or not but just my hypothesis as the new cover with the new grommets I had and the cover still came off but luckily didn't break thanks to the thickness of it. I noticed the wiring harness was in the way. I moved it back and didn't have any problems with the cover coming off after. BUT... I did notice a few times the back of the sidecover coming unhitched which perturbs me a bit. You would be good to drill a hole in the nibs and put a cotter pin through as many guys have mentioned that this works like a charm. There is also a clip that fits in behind the nibs to keep cover from coming off. I dunno the left sidecover is always seemingly the problem child so is pretty hard to find one that hasn't been damaged. I personally think it may be in part because of that wire harness on the frame next to where the nib connects. Go figure.

Now about the z1 question. Maybe Jeff you can tell us about the whole z1 tank set. Is it the same quality as the original stuff? The whole price brings that to mind. The tank is more of a concern than the sidecovers. Is it quality like the original as good as or is the build different.
I heard that the tank was not the same and that given time would be more prone to rust.
I know that maybe there are not a lot of people, to make it worth the manufacturer's while, who restore these old bikes but I think that the build should be precisely the same specs and quality should be at least equal if not MUCH better than original.
It always seems that the replacement parts are just cheap and half thought out replacements designed to empty our wallets and make us frustrated at the end result. There are many of us who would pay a reasonable price to get it done right the first time.
So the question remains. Tell us about the quality Jeff. I may just put an order in for a set if I could be reassured that the quality is equal to or better than original. I certainly would not be interested in buying a set to find that the tank is not the same size or fitment.
Really for a thousand dollars? I paid almost that much to get an average paint job on my tank. For a great paint job more than the cost of the pieces so really what gives?
