Hello Everyone i picked up two of my 900s that i bought in the US from the shipping depot today [i live in Melbourne Australia ] they are both 1976 KZ 900s and i noticed that they had different fuel caps ,one has a flip up cap with a lock which i think is normal but the otherone has a screw in cap with two cleats like a car fuel cap . the tank does not look like it has been modified i cannot feel any weld seams inside the tank around the filler neck does anyone know if it is a stock tank or an after market tank i have never seen a tank like it here

Many of the police bikes came with the screw on caps. Someone has switched the original tank with a Police tank.

Thanks for the information otakar that would explain the differancebetween the two tanks . There are no visible mounting points for the badges did the police tanks have badges or do you think my tank has been filled

The police bikes had a sticker of the individual police department shield on it. They did not say Kawasaki on the tank. They had another sticker on the Sidecover that said Police Special. This is a perfect opportunity to put a MFP sticker on your bike :woohoo:

That would make the tank pretty rare in Australia as i have only seen one Kawasaki ex police bike here ,it was at Zowners club meeting about three months ago but i did not take any notice of the filler neck

The tank not having the badge mounting points makes it more suitable for a custom paint job ,saves having to fill the badge mounting points also one set of side covers had made in japan moulded in them and the other set said made in USA

Hello Dale...I think only the early Police bikes (C models...not P models) had the pop-in, fully removable gas caps. For some strange reason, I cannot access the exploded diagrams and parts lists for the Z1/KZ900 police bikes but can look at parts info for the C1/2/3 bikes (which are the KZ1000 versions (1977-1981)). These latter police models also had the removable (w/key) gas cap and Mother Kawasaki (USA site) shows the gas caps as still active and available. Contact Jeff at www.z1enterprises.com to see if he knows if the early 1000 and 900 police gas caps are comparable...if so, I'm sure he'd order you one. :)
