Tank lining question was created by 88alltrac
ok so i had some rust in my tank. i cleaned it with hydrochloric acid which ate the rust right out and exposed some pinholes. i bought a tank lining kit and followed all of the instructions exactly.
the problem i have is when i was done and inspected the tank i noticed that i had missed a few spots. i rolled and shook the tank into every position i could think of but i still missed some.
is this going to be a problem. there is already some light surface rust forming on those spots from all the humidity.
any suggestions?
i already ruined my paint and was planning on repainting this summer anyways.
is there something i could dunk the entire tank in to take it down to bare metal inside and out and then something i could dunk it in to prevent rust and still paint over the outside coating?:S

Satisfactory results have been reported in previous threads where owners had fuel tank "boiled out" by a local radiator shop, with pinholes repaired, and interior freshly lined, all for $50~$85.
If wanting to remove Kreem, acetone works well.
Good Luck!

i just put the coating in fresh tonight. the brand is northern. a local shop here swears by it. i am just wondering about maybe thinning the liner down and trying to recoat it to cover the bare spots.

my concern i guess is the light rust that will be under the 2nd coat. i hope that it will not continue to rust underneath the lining.

I don't feel good about using tank liner to fix pinholes. Yeah I'd see if acetone cuts it. Ya got to lead the pinholes or braise them. But ya gotta get the liner off first.

they are very tiny holes. i am pretty confident that between the fuel proof liner and the paint on the outside they will be sealed. i just dont want to pull out the liner that i just put in there. it says on the directions on the can that i can do a second coat and i have a little left. i think i will thin it down with MEK as per directions so that it sloshes around better to cover the spots that didnt get it the first time.

to remove everything inside and out you can go to WalMart and buy several gallons of Muratic Acid and a plastic container. The acid can be found where the pool supplies are. Most WalMarts keep the stuff during the summer months.Soak the tank in that for several hours and it will remove all the paint and rust. You will have to remove the Kreem lining first though with Acetone.Use a hari dryer to dry out the tank after rinsing with water. Then to seal the inside I would recommend using POR-15. It comes in black, silver and clear. It works way better than Kreem and it dry hard.If you miss a spot you can touch it up also.
