Removing gas cap on 78 KZ1000 was created by Kojack1982
Im sanding down my tank on a 78 KZ1000 and the gas cap keeps getting in the way. Can anyone possibly instruct me on how to remove the cap without breaking anything. It seems like there is just a rod holding it in but I cant get it out.

On some of the KZ's a spring pin is used to secure the cap to the hinge mechanism. A small drift punch and a hammer should be able to knock it out.

Use a small punch and drive it out.

Mine took about 1,000 little tappys. Also, a little penetrating oil helps. Don't get in a hurry with a big hammer; just take your time - tap tap tap tap. Ed

Ah hell with that tap-tap-tap.... Grab a 2 pound sledge and smack the crap out of her....
Just joking... Remember, that's been in there for 30 years... Plus who knows how many times over she's been painted, gunked up, dirt you name it....
As the others mentioned, she'll tap out....
