Paint for Tach and Speedo Body was created by ozone
I have a 77 KZ650 that is all original. It runs great and I ride it a couple of times a week. I'm in the process of cleaning lens. I thought I'd paint the speedo body since I have it apart. It's not in bad shape but i thought I'd start doing little touch up things. What color should they be and what paint should I used. I want to keep it the original color and look. Right now it looks like a really fadded black.

For a really durable finish, I'd do this:
1.Take some paint stripper and remove the old paint,2.Wash with hot soapy water and rinse well,3.Remove any sign of rust with some 400-600 wet sandpaper,4.Wash and rinse again

5. Get some of the stove and BBQ paint and lightly spray on several coats letting it dry throughly for a day,6.Fire up the oven at home to 350 F and bake the parts for an hour(open up windows as the fumes will stink up the house).

6. Let the parts cool down and reassemble the tach and speedo. This baked on finish will be almost impossible to remove without wire wheel or grit abrasion work.

The tach and speedo shells and upper case should be black & shiney. You mentioned that your bike is all original, and it looks great, but I assume you are aware that the blue paint isn't original.

Cooking the gauges in the oven might not be a good idea.
Disassembly wasn't mentioned & is no simple matter.

PJ1 frame paint might be a good choice. It's supposed to be fairly tough.

Thanks for your help. Sorry I should have said it is all stock except it has been repainted. That was something I did a long time ago. I painted it in my buddy's barn when it was 12 degrees outside with very little heat inside. It's a crappy paint job and I've wanted to repaint it ever since. I plan to do a repaint soon, back to the original red color.

The grips, tires, and chain are not original.

Now that I'm starting to do a little detailing I have found that most of the little rubber grommets are dry rotted. Does anyone sell a package of grommets for this bike?

The KZ650B1 came in Candy Super Red (code 3R) and Candy Emerald Green (code 4U). The KZ650C1 came in Mettalic Regal Blue (code 7M) and Moondust Silver (code 7N).

The paint on the bike shown isn't from a C1 as the striping is different. The picture below shows the striping on the C1:

I don't know of anyplace that sells a kit, but many of the rubber bits can still be found. Take a look at:

Ma Kaw

Under "Vehilce Information" click on "Parts Diagrams." As you go through the parts diagrams and click on the part numbers you'll see some that show "canceled" and some "active." The active ones can be ordered from any dealer. Forgive me if you already know how to use the Ma Kaw site, but I thought this might help if you didn't.
