I believe this remedy was contributed by locozuna in an earlier thread ---
Here's the sidecover showing ample tab clearance so that no hole need be drilled through the external surface of the sidecover. [See wire attachment in following post]

The hitch pin sounds like a great way to go. I'll be doing that soon.

after seeing a par of classic side covers go for $160 on ebay i did the drill and cotter pin route. i went to the tackle box and used a couple of ss leaders and looped the loose end around the frame. the covers can come off a little but then they hang there. assembly requires pushing the leader back thru the gromment.

You can check ebay, or I found a side cover for my 82 LTD at a place called BB Cycle in Mansfield ohio, they have tons of parts for old bikes, and there prices are reasonable. bbcyclesalvage.com

Same problem couple years ago. Bought unfinished side cover from Redline Inc. Had it painted and replaced. Very costly, but well worth it. However, now I have secured them with zip ties. Cheap and easy to take on and off when needed. And obviously, replaced the groumets. That goes without saying.
