Rust treatment & prevention - pic was created by JMKZHI
Here's a pic of a couple of parts.
They were cleaned & polished prior to treatment; the rust was scrubbed w a brass kitchen brush. The fender was sprayed w bar-b-que grill paint on the underside & topcoated w 3M auto undercoating. The tail lite bracket was painted w wheel paint - the silver is actually a good match; although it doesn't matter since the painted area is kinda hidden.

I've done a number of parts this way to treat & prevent rust. It seems to work well.

I did the front fender a couple of years ago w the same stuff (3M 08881 Rubberized Undercoating), but I sprayed a rust fixer as a pre-treatment, instead of bar-b-que paint as was used on the rear fender in the above pic.

The muffler cover was sprayed w bar-b-que paint; the muffler tip was done w engine paint.

Thanks. The parts were in fairly good shape, so it didn't take much effort. I hate rust.

The front fork lowers were done several years ago w the same silver wheel paint as the tail lite bracket (DupliColor). The paint now has some fine cracking but has otherwise held up well.

You've done some nice work there, JMKZHI.....especially those forks. I wonder if a topcoat of clear might have stopped the silver from cracking??
I've done a number of fenders with the undercoat trick. It's great because the petroleum base of the undercoat stops further rusting of any little spots I might have missed in the initial cleanup.

The forks were topcoated w DupliColor High Performance clear wheel coating - I'd forgotten that. I guess the tubes flex? As for the undercoating being petroleum based & rust inhibitive, I didn't think about that: maybe I could've skipped the bar-b-que paint? - I sorta use it as a rust treatment & primer.

For things like an engine cover, I use brake caliper or engine paint. Clean & polish, apply a very light amount of grease to the raised areas, mask the perimeter, then spray. Afterwards, wipe off the lettering n such. Fast n easy.

Not really a rust question or suggestion, but still about paint or touch-up.

How about the white lettering on the controls. The white has vanished on the starter switch side.

Any suggestions on applying some white in there?

Hello bowtie39! :)
We're glad you're here! :cheer:

One option is after clean and dry, use toothpick or whatever to fill lettering depressions with white enamel.
There's likely some slop-over, but leave it alone for awhile until the enamel dries a little.
Dampen a thin smooth white cloth such as hankerchief material with paint thinner or mineral spirits.
Wrap the damp cloth tightly around a popsickle stick or tongue depressor or whatever.
Gently wipe over the lettering to remove the excess slop-over enamel while leaving enamel inside the filled lettering depressions.

An unsure if this is exactly how Picasso would do it.

Good Luck! :)
