how to fiberglass?? was created by mark1122
i'm trying to make a zx6 fender longer at the back. I just put a layer of glass on back of my front fender. The fender is plastic, abs?? anyway the glass is very thin and the fender is about 1/16"? thick. is it best to keep putting on layers of clother or should i be using matt to get it thicker? does it even matter?

Hi Mark,

I'm sure someone has fingered out a way to meld fiberglass fabric with polyester resin ( common fiberglass ) to ABS plastic. But!

Have you read my article about Plastic Body Panel Repair ? If you substitute common ABS pipe cement you'd at least have a resin that's compatible with the rest of the fender.

now you're talking my language!!! The best thing to do is to cut a pattern out of a piece of material that you can glue to the part you want to extend it can be anything from cardboard to a piece of plastic preferably something that will not stick to the Polly Ester resin. DO NOT USE EPOXY WITH ABS it will not stick. Cut the patern an inch or two longer than the extension you want. In the section you want to extend make sure that ALL of any paint is removed down to the raw plastic. Now grind the area to extend, down to a thin taper and put a couple of notches or teeth in the end you want to extend about .75-1 inch long, Now tape the pattern under the lower part of the fender or tack glue it with super glue, so it under-laps about two inches. Now you have an idea of what the part will look like once finished. Now, using glass mat, which is better than cloth for this application, about 6oz weight, start laying up the glass in strips about 0ne ighinch wide in a criss cross pattern at about 45 to 60* one next to the other, overlapping the area you thinned out and pushing it into the notches you cut. Once you have laid one layer start a second in the other direction over the top of the first layer. Do not over saturate the glass but make sure it is fully saturated. Now lay a third layer length wise of the fender. All this glass must overlap the area of the fender you have thinned out. Now start the pattern all over again until you are a little thicker than the original piece. Allow to cure for 25 hours, than remove the pattern piece. If it was plastic, like HDPE or LDPE it will peal right off. If it was card board, just wet it with watter and start rolling it off with a wire brush. Once all the pattern piece is removed, put one layer of mat from underneath, over the seam overlapping about 2 inches each way. Now you can sand the top to shape using your favorite power sander. Don't worry if you have bubbles or you sand too far sanding. You can always add another layer or two or just fill it in with tiger hair or kitty hair. Personally I prefer the Kevlar filled filler from "Evercoat". Once sanded to perfect shape, a little of "Evercoat" PolyEster glazing putty and you are ready for primer.
