Thanks to all that offered their help. It's open thanks to all the good info. I was afraid to put too much force on the key and end up breaking it off(my luck runs that way). So some graphite lock lub and a little more torque did the trick. Thanks again.:woohoo: :woohoo:

Hello, I do not know how old this post is. And I am new to this site. But if you're wanting to remove the gas cap without a key , there is a roll pin in the hinge section of the gas cap. A 1/8 long punch will remove it. Then just lift it up. I hope this information helps someone

I recently misplaced the gas cap key for my '81 750 and even though the lock is rudimentary I couldn't find a screwdriver or similar key that could open it. Fortunately I eventually found the key, but I'd sure like to find a spare now...

I'm using an Ilco KA/14 X/103 key on my 81 650-CSR. It's almost identical to the stock key in pic. There are probably other Ilco keys that could be used. see Ilco catalog.

I've got a couple of those Ilco keys for my bike but the gas cap key is different - shorter length and fatter.
