Gun Kote 1200? was created by switch
KG industries, Stock Kote, 1200 Air Cure. Anyone else out there tried this product? I have had my difficulties and would like to share experiences with anyone else.

I have had some success, but with this _____ storm and the temps, my unheated garage has not been hospitable to painting. So, I thought I would do the next best thing and Talk about it.

WELL, I CAN REPORT SUCCESS AT LAST! SEE MY THREAD AT "PROJECTS". THIS IS AN AWSOME PRODUCT. THERE IS A TRICK TO IT, AND IF ANYONE NEEDS TO KNOW, I AM GLAD TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE WITH PREPARATION AND APPLICATION.
BELOW ARE MY TRIPLE TREES WHICH I PAINTED IN 35 DEGREE WEATHER IN MY UNHEATED GARAGE.

THE LOWER WAS CHROME PLATED ORIGINALLY.

Plummen,
This stuff was originated to coat parts that can't be BAKED at 325 F. I couldn't get my oven rigged for the 50 amp service, so I went for this material. BUT, for this coating you have to HEAT the part just as you would for the bake on stuff.
Luckily, you only have to get it up to 110- 120 F. Then the water in the coating will flash off and the coating will adhere. Then it sets up and cures at room temp. I shot mine at 34 degrees F and it cured out in a couple hours at that temp.

They do say that you can brush or even roll this stuff on! But I haven't tried that, as my spray has been sufficient.

It looks good. You can get as much coating thickness as you want. You can recoat after the initial covering has set up. Maybe the brush will come in handy for any rock dings that might occur, although this is supposed to be every bit as tough as the bake on.
Thank for asking.

Thanks for the info switch. It will come in handy.

When I gunkoted my engine parts the issue was the oven. I used the one in my kitchen and the house smelled a bit for a couple of hours after.

Since then Ive baked lots of cakes and they taste fine. :D

I am temporarily w/o a computer at home. will be a week before I am on line again. I am posting from work, so this will be brief.

Tony, I would check w/ KG Industries about how much heat the cured 1200 series paint will withstand. Theorectically it is for parts that can't be heated, so I am doubtful about engine parts. it's a good question though.

I have been absent for a lot of reasons, but I had a breakthrough tonight I thought would be of interest. I have painted the lowers on my forks, and stupidly not masked off the upper end. So I found myself with some great looking painted parts, with a fine coating of abrasive on the inside of the tube!

Sprayed it out with Brake cleaner. It worked great, but most of all, I had my first test of the quality of this paint product, and it did not even touch the finish. I am gaining respect for this stuff.

New computer tomorrow! Have lots of pics to post on Projects.

Hey switch, Good to see you back again. It's interesting you should post this today. I talked to kg coatings today about using the air cure gunkote on engine cases and they advised against it. So I guess that is that.

I have my 750 engine torn down. I've been using paint stripper to remove the old gasket material from the engine cases, so of course it's taken paint with it. I guess it will be baked on gunkote for the 750 engine cases.

Here's a link to my first gunkote project.

Looking forward to seeing your pics.

I have been useing gunkote for about 30 years. I must say that it has its place. where you are useing it is not it. Gunkote is fantastic on certain but not all engine and carburetor parts. It is a very hard hence brittle finish. I use it on guns and it is fantastic because of the thin film. Where you used it you should have used one of two products. Either "Por-15", or "Polane" both of these finishes are almost as good as powder coat but you can do it at home. Take a look at my thread where I talk about gunkote.

Polane is available from the Commercial paint division of Sherwin-Williams. There are two different hardeners for the paint. One is "B" catalyst and one is "A" catalyst for outdoor use. you want "A" catalyst Part # V66 V 29. There is also Polane "B" and Polane "T" you want "B" which is gloss. The "A" hardener will take longer to cure but it will last almost forever. Polane was originally designed to be used without primer over metal. I plan on useing it on my engine cases, cylinder block, head and valve cover. The Gunkote I use on the side-covers and carburetor covers. The carburetor housings I will also use Polane.
