Seat Questions on 76 Kz900-A4 was created by DoubleDub
I ordered a new cover for my seat from Z1E, and I'm pretty happy with the quality of it (considering I had just take a sheet of vinyl and made it work temporarily, just about anything would be better, but the SaddleMen product does seem very nice).

However, I noticed when I took the crappy temporary cover off that the seat has indentations from butts over the years for the driver and passenger. I started to wonder if the foam had actually been replaced on the seat or if this is common. With my horrible vinyl cover I didn't notice these indentations, but it seems a lot more noticable as I start to stretch the new cover over the seat. I haven't finished the install of the cover and will have to take some pictures.

Is it common for this to happen on seats this old? I have verified the pan to be correct from pictures on the interwebs (Redline's web page had nice shots to compare against), but I'm still curious about the foam?

Edit: I guess I'm curious because I know the Kz900-A4 came with a flat seat like the Z1's, but this almost seems severe enough to be an aftermarket jobby, but the pan is original Kz? Does the foam normally compress this much?

Pics would help but foam certainly does degrade with time and 30+ years of butts can deform anything. I don't know about the flat seats but I believe the stepped seats had a couple of different density foams in their make-up. Plus some were pleated which could cause depressions. 30 year old foam most likely need to be replaced. Best to get us pics.

Yeah....I have to wait till after work and I'll get them uploaded. I'm pretty sure it's just wear, it's pretty subtle compared to the stepped seats I've seen out there, but I wanted someone who knew more than me to confirm (doesn't take much...).

Okay...here are pics of the seat foam.

Now that I looked at it in the light of the camera, I'm pretty sure it's not the original shape.

Thoughts?

What's involved with replacing the seat foam to get the correct shape for the bike?

DD, Looks like an LTD pad thats been carved on to me.Oe "flat seats" lacked the still obvious step pic. shows from side. Still, It appears to have enough foam remaining to support a LTD cover if your' of a mind. Mine was similar thru dry-rot, and while it was time consuming I managed to reproduce the original shape abet @ an inch lower. stock pads are still avail. thru Sudco which match pan indents for @ $70.00. luck G

An electric carving knife does a nice job reshaping seat foam. Do it after carving the turkey or dont get caught.

Thanks, guys. I'm a little hesitant to try to carve it myself as I don't have the real shape as a guide except through pictures. I guess if pads are available from someone I could give it a shot and if worse comes to worse go ahead and order. As always, thanks! Can't wait for this damn snow to melt so I can get to riding.
