Jim, I think that maybe you should take a look at my rims before you go painting. The chrome makes the spokes and lips stand out. I have removed all the machine marks and sanded my spokes up to 2000 grit removed all of the fine scratches and it looked good enough to stop right there but I continued and the spokes got buffed with the emory, tripoli and white compound and they look just like chrome. A little honda detailer on the paint and it looks about new with no overspray marks or runs or ... Trust me when you see those rims on my black bike you will drool on yourself and then you will change your underwear and do the same thing I did. Don't paint it yourself you will not get it right. If anything sand it down and take em in to get em powdercoated or have someone paint them for you that paints for a living. Or just leave em and either wd40 them or honda detailer on em you will see that if they haven't already been molested they will look like a million bucks. I also sanded the spit out of the cush drive unit it gleams as well. Come by this weekend and we will take a ride and you will see for yourself. Sat? Sun? But this time for real no BS

You could also try smoothing them out before paint or powder. It will take forever but look nice.

Wheels get the most abuse. NO at least gun coat if you are not going to powder coat.
Keep em looking stock or stockish but really clean is all you need to do IMO. I think the aluminum and black are what looks best all black and... well no contrast. Monochrome only looks good if everything is painted or chromed black or variations of black.

Don't know if this will help but I had my wheels and frame powdercoated gloss black. They are just how I wanted them to look for my project. Here is a pic of the rear wheel:

I have the old Morris mags (18-19) on my 77kz1000, and simply cleaned and sprayed w/dupli-color's ceramic gloss black, then cleaned accents & polished w/happiche's semi chrome polish.contrast is excellent, and I don't have to worry about touch-up every time I change tires.G
