Ok i am going to order the paint for my 1974 z1a 900 from paintworks, the green with the yellow striping. I know it is a multi stage setup the way kawasaki painted those tanks. Is there anyone the specifically deals with repainting Kz's and Z1's back to the stock colors? I know i can send it to paintworks and they will paint it, but it's like 1200 bucks. Any suggestions? Thanks guys..

You know, with the paint from Paintworkz, any decent motorcycle painter (who has plenty of experience) should be able to puzzle it out. BUT, any decent motorcycle painter is going to charge you US$1000+ even if you supply the paint...which will bring you back to Paintworkz...and he'll do it right.:) However, that said, Mark Wing does quality work and he has done OEM restorations (the KZ700A1/KZ750L3 leaps to mind and it looked good).

There is that guy in Germany that will do it. I'm sure he has a loooooong wait time and charges 5-6K but it is an exact replica of the factory paint jobs. Maybe Ron will pay for new paint for everyone!

Sure, everyone paint your bikes on me :) I'm happy to see at least factory type jobs going on. The main gripe I have always had on repaints is their inability to withstand every day use. I'm hoping a couple thousand dollar job this has been addressed, but wouldn't bet on it. The other thing is just the pure ugly of all repaints that are non factory, so this won't be a problem if a factory job goes on as long as it holds up.
I really enjoy seeing a "weathered" motorcycle with original paint, and weathered original older cars or trucks get me too. Don't see very many as most need to repaint before they get "weathered" then the repaint turns to crap and they are no longer cool, just fugly.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Has anyone used the paint from paintworks. I can't get in touch with them. Have they switched to urethane paints. I a little experience with painting but I'm not sure about the the stripes and placing them in the exact place. This is for a 73 Z1.

Justin, If I were doing a restoration, I wouldn't look at the price of the paint job as much as the quality. The guy who owns www.paintworkz.com/ is the MAN in Z1 painting in the US. He is very much respected among the guys who are into SERIOUS restoration. Go to their website and get in touch.

I wasn't worried about price. I just like to paint. I was worried that I could not get the stripes in the exact correct position. I have tried a few times to contact paintworks with no luck. I'll try today.

Jus,

Sorry you are having a tough time contacting me. I do sell Urethane for the 73's and layout for stripes is included. Best to email me, or leave a voice mail message.
