Tank Exterior Cleaning

Tank Exterior Cleaning was created by Justyn
My tank has some "gunk" buildup on the outside of it. I tried, quite quickly, to clean it with some aerosol multi-purpose cleaner and then a little bit of gasoline. Neither really made a difference.

I like the stock paint on the bike. It's a sparkley purple, with an organish iridescence. There is just some buildup robbing the luster and shine, probably because it's thirty years old. I was wondering if anyone had some tips as to what would clean the gunk, without harming the underlying finish. I'd like to clean the side covers too, but those aren't nearly as gunky.

For the record, I'm told that gunk is the technical term.

I appreciate any help you all can provide.

what about carefully and gently polishing the clearcoat with a paint polish? Worked for me once.

But then again ....you used gas????????

It was only a tiny splash of gas, and I've seen it clean other things quite well. I figured being I used it on the gas tank, Kawasaki had enough foresight to treat it against any negative effects gas may have. But I also seem to have momentarily forgotten about the saying about assuming....

No, I've never seen The Blob.

Stock = Sparkely Purple????? not computing........

Well I'm guessing that it's stock paint. The side covers and tank match very well. It doesn't look like a paint job someone would have done, but it is missing tank badges, so who knows. I know next to nothing about the history of this bike that my joker friends named purple rain.

It's a darker purple that seems to have very fine glitter mixed into it, much finer than the stuff strippers wear. :P But then from the right angles, it looks orange. I'll have to get some pictures on the next sunny day that also has free time.

what about carefully and gently polishing the clearcoat with a paint polish?

It looks like there are some dust and dirt particles in the gunk, so I'm a bit weary of using much friction.

I think I'll give some WD40 a shot, cause I've got lots of that around. If that doesn't work, then I guess I'll buy some simple green.

I seem to remember a purple 2 stroker that might have been a Kaw but I can't remember a 750 Purple Rain  . Thats not to say I'm not wrong....It's bound to happen someday!!!:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

I only said "GAS!" cause it is the great ruiner of paint jobs. Only thing more deadly seems to be brake fluid or magma! ;)

"The Blob" was good! Steve McQueen was a wise guy hero but the goo was the real star. I especially remember someone playing with it on a stick letting it slide down a stick when it suddenly slid up and onto their hand.    :( :( :( :( :(

Would like to see pictures when you get a chance and good luck chasing away the goo! B)

"The Blob"... Is that KOOL RYDER avatar image?

OMR

BTW, one thing that has been working in a lot of different cleanings has been Oops! Stuff works pretty well, not sure what it will do to the paint though.
