sealing gas tank

Who has used the Por 15 sealer. I have it but the stripper did not do the trick. I used muratic acid few times to get rid of the old sealer. I discovered a couple of pin holes. Would it be wise to use JB weld or just use the mig to spot weld the holes shut before sealing. What do you guys think?

Por 15 comes with a stripper. It did have a liner before. Just not covered well. I had the tank cleaned at a radiator shop. It only exposed the poor liner in the tank. Waste of money. The stripper did ok but muratic acid works the best. Its quick and easy. And you are left with bare metal. I now have exposed some pin holes. Just wanted some advice on filling those in. I think if I open the hole with a drill a little and then clean the area, I can just tack it and it will be fine. What do you guys think?

Ok, I don't want to open a can of worms here, but having done the POR15 treatment 2 weeks ago, here is what I know for a fact. As JMK mentionned, if you bought the "Cycle Tank Repair Kit", it is used for tank that have not been lined before, and it contains Marine Clean, Metal Ready, and the Tank Sealer, as well as a brush and a cloth patch. Now if you bought the "HeavyDuty Cycle Tank Repair Kit", which you should've bought, it contains all of the above, but most importantly POR-Strip, a liner stripper to be applied before the other steps. I only have done the first on my tank, and it works darn well! I'm very happy with the results.

As for the pinholes I could not tell you what's best as I never had to deal with this issue. Anyway, good luck!

THats what I used is the Heavy Duty kit. The stripper is ok but couldn't do it. The muratic acid is the best stripper/cleaner. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to fill holes. I decided not to line the tank since its for restoration purposes. After filling the holes I'll just do the CLR and then WD40.

What's "CLR"? I hope it's a sealer of some kind because after muriatic acid has been on the metal it's going to rust like an old Chevy Vega without sealer.

Ron,

I get to help you this time.

CLR is Calcium, Lime , and Rust remover.

It is a product you buy that works on just about eerything from rust stains , lime build up on shower heads, and hardwater stains on coffee pots.

I should sell the stuff.

Thanks for that info. So the CLR will help keep rust from reforming?

Nope, it removes the rust.
WD40 keeps it from returning.

How did yor tank look after the POr15. I did mine about an hour ago. And it didn't look as if the stuff cover that thick. I had some surface rust and it looks as if you can see it thru the sealer. I was wandering if I could pour some in later to double the coating before the first coating complete dries. I thought I would call the company and see what they say. Do you have any pics of the inside of you tank to compare.

Back to the pinholes... You can JB Weld them or braze them. I don't think a mig welder would make a clean fix. You will have to do some grinding. Brazing fills in the holes. Once you do fix the holes, pressure test the tank or you WILL have missed some holes. Guarantee it.
