Finishing the paint. was created by Becker
So I started doing my first rattle can paint job. Huge learning experience so far. My problem is that I know have 3 coats of rattle can clear on it and even though i wet sand after each coat when i spray another coat on it looks kinda rough and not really what I would expect. I'm using 600 grit aluminum silicon sand paper to wet sand. I need to know how to finish it. Do I just wet sand it nice and smooth and then wait a week and polish it and then it will look good and shiny?? How do you guys go about finishing your paint jobs?? It's my first time doing anything paint related so any advice at all would be good.

First off, prep is everything, you must be patient, wait the cans direction on flash windows between coats...

Your final wet sands should be 1500-2000 grits.

You sure you want to use canned clear coat?
None of us have found a truly "GAS resistant" product.

Use the search function "Clear Coats" on the subject for there's a whole slew of postings on this subject.

I know, shameful plug...

I'm not really that worried about fuel resistance yet. This is just kind of a learning experiment. Thanks for the articles and tutorials they really help and I think I will be able to do it now.

Go to www.paintforcars.com and get the Xtreme Urethane Clear with hardner for under $80 for a gallon. If you have access to a air compressor, buy a cheap HVLP gun from Harbor Freight, Menards, Lowes, Home Depot or the like for less than $50.

You can lay all three coat down in less than an hour and you can wet sand and buff the next day. Or, leave as is. You will be much happier and it will certaily be resistant to chemicals such as fuel and cleaners.

I know you are thinking this sounds difficult, but please believe me. There is nothing more difficult, or frustrating than using spray cans to paint your,,,, anything.

You can do it

Well I finished the job using 600 grit and wet sanding. Then I used turtle wax rubbing compound. After that I used finishing compund on it, and finished with turtle wax. It looks ok. not fantastic but i learned alot. Next time I'll be spraying it all on with a hvlp gun and some decent paint. Also I'll use higher grit sandpaper in wetsanding. thanks everyone for your help. I'll post pictures of my next job.
