I have a 79 kz650 C and cannot figure how the heck to get the gas cap off.....its not in the clymer manual and couldnt find it on here.... maybe i am a little slow...but any help would be appreciated.
Its the kind of cap with a hinge on the rear and a pin running through it...

you drive the pin out, and the cap will come off

Yea it's a roll pin just held in by friction, it will drive out either side, but you need to be patient and carefull because you'll bend the mount on the tank to crap long before the pin drives out if you start simply pounding it. You're best if you want the tank to not get damaged to remove the tank where you can support the bracket with a piece of wood or something as you tap out the pin.

I found a nail that was just smaller than the aperture in the cap, and filed the point flat. It made a great tool to tap out the pin.

It helps to put a little Kroil or other penetrating oil on the pin (don't get it on the tank). Then use 10,000 LITTLE taps (NOT 1 big whack) using a drift pin or other suitable tool to drive it.
