Welding tips
30 May 2008 08:33
Hi everybody,
I need to weld two brackets to the side of the frame(kz900) to hold zrx1200 brake and shifter controls setup. Since i am new to welding ( i bought a flux-cored wire welding unit). Do i need to remove all electrical setup (harness, battery, etc....) to proceed with the welding ?
Any tips greatly appreciated! Thanks

I think the only thing you probably really need to do is diconnect and maybe remove the battery and make sure the leads aren't touching the frame anywhere.

practice on scrap metal for temp and feed rate, it's easy to burn through these frames. And the more time spent on preping the bike the better the weld (welding is all about patience)you want to make sure the area is clean so burning paint doesn't cause air bubbles in your welding bead. The other thing since you're using a flux core make sure to cover your engine with something to prevent the metal from splashing on too it (flux-core likes to make a mess). I have an old thread on how to weld with oxy-acetylene and they share the same principle.

For sure just tack your pieces then stop and check you alignment and positioning then using a wire brush reclean the area. Once you're satisfied with the locations weld it up. Weld right through your tacks as if they weren't there.
