I'm about to buy a new tank of ebay for my 1980 kz650sr. My question is will a tank from a 1978 kz650 b model fit?? I've had no luck with a search....

It will fit the onto the frame posts in the front, but it mounts differently in the rear since the frames on the B/C and D (SR) are completely different.

I have a 1979SR and mounted it on a 1977 KZ650B as a test and it plugged right in with no mods. This was a couple years ago and I'm 95% sure of this. 1980 there was no SR, there was the LTD which should be the same.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

In the next two hours I plan on walking outside and seeing if the tank off a '67 Norton Atlas will fit my '95 KZ1000P if that counts for anything..
I think you can fit anything to anything (within reason) as long as you're willing to get creative.
Then again, I'm nuts.
EDIT:
It fit all right, very comfortable around the knees. I could have rigged up an aluminum mounting bracket to fit around the back bone, and a rubber mount under the frame with a clip to hold the rear.
I just, I'm moving in 29 days, and have too many projects already.
Best of luck with your tank tho. Hope it works out.
