Anyone have an idea of what brand of paint, primer and clear will work best to repaint the old girl.

She is looking a little worse for wear.

I haer Plasti-Kote is great, but cannot find any here in Calgary.

Any success stories would be greatly recieved.
Photos would help as well.

Thanks in advance to all of the cool peeps out there in KZ land.B)

Rockin\' a KZ650B2 since 2007 and a KZ 1000E since 2008

I used Dupli-color Metal-Flake Enamel ($12.oo a can ?!?!).... Worked great!

I have heard that Laquer is better for beginners, after I had already used Enamel. Oh well...

Laquer will not paint over Enamel without some bad chemical reactions!!! (correct me if I am wrong all, please.) All other combinations are acceptable. (laquer over laquer, enamel over laquer, enamel over enamel)

You have not mentioned your Pre-prep. May I offer un-asked for advice of completely stripping the old finish, down to the metal.

I used Dupli-Color auto spray and clear coat to paint my tank, side covers and tail. The finish and shine came out really nice. I have yet to ride the bike since painting so I can't really tell you how durable it is and how it holds up to getting dirty and washing. From what I hear it should be fine.

I painted my car with Tremclad and loved it. I would have done the bike with it too but I didn't see the colours I was looking for. Here are a pic of the bike and car.

After 30 posts or so on all the problems you had rattle can painting you still think it was worth doing? Not trying to start a war as I'm sworn to keep my lips zippered, but my gosh.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

C'mon, Ron. Some of us are not fortunate enough to have bikes that don't need re-painting.:( When these posts come up they're usually put here by those of us who are trying to better something we already like. I'm going to HAVE TO re-paint mine, though, like you, I'm a purist and would prefer to have mine just like it left the plant. But, because of my limited finances I'm still going to try to get it to look as good as I can. In other words I'm going to get what my budget allows and do it as many times as required to achieve the best results I can afford. Nobody was born knowing all this. I've been a painter for almost 30yrs and I'm still trying to master brush and roller. The type of painting these old bikes require is much trickier and less forgiving.

What I'm saying is that I hope more of the guys and gals here will feel free to share their experiences on the subject without being made to think that it is wrong or stupid or irrational even to attempt to make their projects end up with the best possible results that can be achieved by whatever medium that is affordable to each one's means.

I hope we can get past this and get on with working to make some of the previously neglected bikes look beautiful again.;)

Was it only 30? Felt like 100...

Yup, would have had it no other way Guys. I learned tons and am proud of what I have accomplished.

Yes, I ended up spending twice what a body shop would have charged, (don't even get me started about the time).

Fortunately I didn't do it to save money.

Rattle can paint worked for me...
If done correctly (prep and painting) there's no way in hell you can tell the difference. Unless your bike is for show room examinations, rattle can works fine.

Paint itself is not normally GAS resistent but the clear coat is.

Black: Dupli Color Acrylic Enamel
Orange: Dupli Color Metal Cast Orange (used Ground base, think metal flake primer)

Sherwin Willams 2 phase Clear Coat.
RS6200 Clear Coat
