Anybody got pictures of a black engine? was created by Afrosemite
I'm still trying to fill out "Big List of Summer Projects." My 4-1 pipes are pretty blued up near the header so I was considering wrapping them. Then I got to thinking that if I was going to that I might want to paint the engine to match the look of the wrap. It's a dangerous process, this list building.
So, anybody have some pictures of the blacked out engine?
Also, how big a pain in the arse is it to paint? I dont have too mcuh access to shop space but I am pretty resourceful

When I had my engine rebuilt, it was painted a flat black. I'll post some pictures this weekend when I get back home this weekend.

If you want an idea of what a black engine looks like, simply google a bike like the 1984 GPZ 1100 under the images area. If I am not mistaken they had a factory black motor.

The factory black engines like the GPZ of course were not simply painted, it was a hard, hard coating. Even the hard coating on my KZ1000MKII is all chipped up from miles of road as well as the black forks that suffered an even worse fate. Of course the forks can be stripped to bare aluminum is what I did with many hours of work. Painting an engine is an extremely risky proposition. If your engine is really that bad it's an option, otherwise a bad mistake. Look at the 1973 Z1 black engine which I believe was simply painted and see what happens to a painted engine. By 1974 Kawasaki knew paint was not durable enough for an engine so they went to bare aluminum until later in the 70s when they did the hard coat paint. Of course everyone here knows my attitude towards paint and I'm not trying to get into that issue.

I intended on simply providing him with a quick and easy-to-find example of what a black engine looks like Ron. I don't suspect that too many folks would be able to tell the exact composition of the black engine coating simply from a low-resolution, Internet photograph. Just trying to make things simple and easy for a fellow enthusiast:)

Afrosemite, I painted my engine years ago. I removed the header, points cover, stator cover, and carbs, masked off the rest. Z1 has some nice PJ1 engine paint in satin black, easy touch up when needed. (remember to click for larger pic)

I shoot the scuffed up marks on my engine with a rattle can of BBQ black every now and then. I have been happy with the look.

Should I assume this is a project that requires the engine off the frame?

Nope, did mine in frame. Just need to remove, mask and work around a few things. Not a big deal...
